Attic insulation in Arizona: how much you need, what it costs, and how the SRP rebate works
Attic insulation is the single biggest comfort and energy upgrade for most Phoenix-area homes. Here is how much your attic should have, how to tell if you are short, what an upgrade costs, and how SRP customers get $600 taken off the price.
How much attic insulation does an Arizona home need?
Most Phoenix-area attics should be at R-38 to R-49. With blown-in fiberglass, that is roughly 14 to 18 inches of depth spread evenly across the attic floor.
R-38 is the standard SRP builds its rebate around and the level we recommend for Valley homes. R-49 is the most an Arizona attic needs; past that, each added inch does very little.
In the attics we inspect, the typical Valley home has about 6 to 7 inches, roughly R-19. That means most homes are about 7 inches short of where they should be.
Why attic insulation matters so much in Phoenix
Phoenix attics reach 150–160°F on summer afternoons. The only thing between that heat and your ceiling is the insulation on the attic floor.
When that layer is thin, heat moves down into the house all afternoon and keeps coming for hours after sunset. Your AC runs longer, upstairs rooms run hotter, and the bill climbs. Bringing the attic up to R-38 typically trims cooling costs by 10 to 12 percent and makes temperatures more even from room to room.
Signs your attic needs more insulation
Blown-in fiberglass vs. cellulose
We install blown-in fiberglass because it holds its depth. Cellulose settles over time.
Cellulose compacts under its own weight, so 12 inches blown in years ago may measure far less today, and a settled attic loses R-value. Fiberglass does not settle and does not absorb moisture, so the R-value you pay for is the R-value you keep. We back every blown-in fiberglass job with a lifetime warranty on the material and our installation.
How much does attic insulation cost?
A typical 1,800 square foot Mesa attic going from about R-19 to R-38 runs about $2,070 before the rebate. SRP customers can take up to $600 off, bringing it as low as $1,470.
Your price depends on attic square footage, how many inches you need, attic access and whether old insulation has to come out first. We measure first and give you an itemized quote with the rebate already applied.
How the SRP attic insulation rebate works
The SRP rebate applies when your attic is under R-38 today and the upgrade brings it up to R-38. It covers up to $600, applied as an instant discount on your invoice.
We are a BPI-certified, SRP Certified Preferred Contractor, so we confirm eligibility during the free inspection, file every form and take the discount off the top. You never pay full price and wait for a check. Single-family homes, condos and apartments are eligible; new construction and mobile homes are not.
The attic access dam
The attic hatch is the one bare spot in an otherwise insulated ceiling. We box it in with an access dam so the insulation stays put, and cap it with an insulated, weather-stripped access door so heat and conditioned air stop leaking through the opening.
